First time home buyer and EXHAUSTED from moving in... Advice?
We bought a house that needs a ton of work. I feel like we hardly did anything, yet we are both EXHAUSTED There's so much left... We lucked out with getting a huge house for the money due to it being a pre forclosure. It was our dream house. We saw past what it needs to see what it could be... But now that we are in we are overwhelmed Do a lot of people get this way? This is our first house

What is more attractive to a potential home buyer...?
we are planning to remodel the master bathroom in our house and weren't sure if we should keep the his hers sink set up or just make it a single sink and have much more counter space. we don't particularly care for the his hers set up but if it would be a great selling feature, we'd keep it.

If you were a home buyer, which would you prefer?
Nicely built deck or beautiful tile patio? Keep in mind, yards down this street are small but blah and need a little something to look appealing.

First time home buyer looking for a little help?
hi, i am a first time home owner and was just looking for a little help understanding something. my sump pump and my eaves troughs go into drainage hoses into the ground drain which is supposed to go out to the road. every hour or so i hear waterflow going on in the eaves hose follwed by a gurgle sound. I don't think it is my sump pump making the gurgle noise because it happens when the sump pump is not even running. can anyone help me understand what is going on???

What would be the most important home improvement task that should be done first for a first time home buyer?

Having a re-connect inspection done on my new fixer upper home? first time home buyer?
I live in Richmond, Indiana my husband and I bought our first home, a fixer upper, and are beginning to think we may be in over our heads However, we are determined to make this work, we have the city code inspector coming on Thursday because the house has been empty for more than 6 months and we must have it inspected before they will turn the electricity back on. So after about a trillion google searches, I just can not find the rules or guidelines that they will be looking for me to follow, so if one of you could maybe give me a general idea as to what they look for or even a website would be awesome I just really would like to know what I am up against, also what should NOT be going on inside the house when the inspector pays his visit, like, is there anything in particular I should make sure is fixed before he gets there? Anything he could see that would shut the remod down all together? Thanks for looking built in 1880 and in similar condition to most of the surrounding houses. 11 minutes ago 4 days left to answer.Additional Detailsyou would think so right So not the way it is I have called my code inspectors office and at least 4 surrounding county code offices and yes, it is apparently a HUGE secret Not even the local electricians will tell me what it is I need to know All the same answer, the inspector can tell you when they see the property. I promise this is not an idle question I have had the phone on my ear and the internet on my fingers non stop for two weeks, and I don't know anymore about it now than I did before we bought the house. No one seems to be able to tell me anything for sure, I've even had an electrician out to the house but after telling me that " sheila at the inspectors office usually goes to lunch from 12 to 1 but she had an appt today and will be out from 1 to 2 so call her then" he said the inspector will have to tell me what is needed, no body will tell me anything.... sooo frustratingre posted in a different category, not much in the way of answers in repairs.

1st time home buyer, trying to avoid oil tanks, share your knowledge!?
I am in Milwaukee looking at a house built in 1955 It has gas heating but MIGHT have an underground oil tank which could be under the driveway if my logic is right . Our offer has been accepted and since I do not want the headaches of an oil tank removal I need help finding out if there is one, 1 During the home inspection we came across about a 2 3" diameter by 2 foot long steel pipe with a threaded end coming out of the foundation in the basement on the inside inspector said there might be an UNDERGROUND tank. there is not one inside this is what the pipe looks like the bigger one I found a pic of a similar pipe, this is not my setup inspect ny.com oiltanks smallvent.jpg2 concrete slabs run around the whole house. I cannot find any vent or fill pipes in logical areas on the outside of the house3 Two neighbors say " all the houses on the street are from1955 1957" they say that the homes used to have them inside, What should we look for? Thanks for the helpful info Yahoo cut me off at a certain number of characters so I couldnt expound as much as I wanted to. I agree with what you said about the 3 8" lines coming in the house also about trusting the neighbors and I appreciate the info about the alternative to removal. The reason I can't find out from the previous owner is because it is a bank foreclosure. Most all of the homes we have looked at had oil tanks in the basement of the house. I will have to go back in the house when it is lighter and now that I have understood more about tanks i had no idea they existed before last month and look for more evidence while the realtor tries to check on some records. Thanks Again

Water Heaters and Furnaces! First time home buyer!?
Hi I am looking at a house and considering an offer. I like the house, but both the furnace and the water heater are 17 years old. That concerns me. I have found costs for a water heater and it looks like it would cost around a 1000 dollars to replace a water heater, but I cant find any prices on furnaces. About how much would it cost me to replace a furnace?Do you think the age of these two things should cause me to lower my offer, and if so by how much.Thank YouThe house is a little over 1300 Sq FT.I have seen 50 gallon 40,000 btu water heater tanks for about six hundred dollars. I am estimating the water heater will cost 1000 dollars installed. There is two bathrooms. I dont know the manufacturer of the current water heater or furnace.I am having it inspected.I am currently offering 6,000 less than asking price.A fair price is whatever the seller and I end up agreeing on.Thanks everyone.

Where is the best place to learn, for a first time home buyer, who wants to buy a foreclosure?
That pretty much sums it up. I have some money saved, and I would like an inexpensive house. I figured the handy guys have done this, so I'm posting it here. Thank you

Why would a home buyer need a concrete entry or patio?
We're selling our house. Recently a potential buyer went through the house on two separate occasions, but ultimately decided not to buy. One of their reasons was the " lack of a real cement entry or patio." We have 3 entries into the house. The front door has a wooden deck and a concrete stoop. In the back, there's a slider that leads directly onto another wooden deck. And there's a brick patio in the back with a wide brick step leading up to the 3rd door. The brick step is wide enough that the door swings out over the step, and the step extends beyond the edges of the door in both directions when the door is open. So, what is this buyer talking about? Why would you need a concrete entry or patio? So many homes that are the same age as mine that have a concrete entry have cracks wear crumbling in the concrete, so it doesn't seem to make aesthetic sense. So, is there a functional purpose for concrete as opposed to wood or brick?

First Time Home Buyers Help?
What help is out there for first time home buyers? We would like to buy our first home but don't have enough for a deposit and have heard of schemes that can help but we cant find any info

Home buyers perspective?? Is LIGHT or DARK wood prefered for kitchen cabinetry on a remodeled home?
We're remodeling a home in LA County, its valued at about 400K and I was just wondering if I should suggest dark wood over the light. The person in charge of the remodel is 55 and he's done a lot of remodes new home building, and he always went with the medium semi light colored oak cabinets. Should I suggest dark wood? Or just let the pro do his job. I did line up this job for this person, however its my father....what do you think......???? They will be taking out the entire kitchen etc but what do you think about the cabinets....
