How are taxes paid on a investment account?
My mother died recently and had 40k in a Smith Barney account, my sis & I are to split it and she wants her half to stay, I'll be taking mine out. Any idea on how the tax issues work on this ? Do they take taxes out before I recieve a check, or do I get the full amount and claim it next year on my taxes ?Thanks for the advice...a little more detail, her husband own's the condo they have, and is doing all the work as far as her possesions, so there is no will to speak of, she had cancer & plenty of time to take care of all those issues. So there is no part for me & my sis to play, no probate court, nothing...just the investment that was given to us or put in our name as an even split . I've been in touch with her financial advisor at SB and she's already aware & awaits the death certificate so the insurance company as she puts it can send paperwork for me to fill out and process the check. It was in fact an IRA account and the amount in it should have frozen the day she was informed of my Mom's death. So my question is...when I get the check is it minus tax I assume a penelty will apply or is it the full amount minus penelty and I file it as income next year ?Thanks for the advice...a little more detail, her husband own's the condo they have, and is doing all the work as far as her possesions, so there is no will to speak of, she had cancer & plenty of time to take care of all those issues. Questions about first time stock investment (college student)?
Hello, I am currently 20 years old and am in college. I will have little to no debt to worry about upon graduating zero college loans . I am interested in making my first investments in the open market, to grow my portfolio which currently consists of a savings, checking, and a locked CD account with a credit union , but I am curious about how best to get started. I have been researching the web to ensure I understand the trading process, but still have a few questions for investors with more experience and wisdom than I. I have around $7,000 total, but obviously don't want to risk all of it through trading. What would be a good amount to start with? I will be using an online broker and was considering Scottrade because of it's $500 minimum account requirement . Do you think it's a good online broker for first time investors?I am hoping to invest anywhere between $500 and $700 as a beginning amount. Is that too small as a starting point? Keep in mind I am mostly doing this initial amount as a way to gain experience with investing. Finally, what is best to invest in at this point? Is it worth buying just one share of a major company APPL just to gain experience but little return obviously , or should I pursue much cheaper stocks or mutual funds with a little more risk, but possibly more benefits?Any and all help is appreciated

How do I gain access to details of a fraudulent investment made in my name?

May anyone please give me a small investment idea?
You always hear stories about self made millionaires through simple business ideas such as making a magazine or designing jewelry from home, etc. My goal isn't to become a millionaire but I'd love to start something that would potentially generate continuous income revenue perhaps open a shoe store, etc . I'd like to try something different this year with my tax return and I'm thinking of investing a portion of it but I don't know in what, where or how. Because I'm not too familiarized with stocks, I'm hesitant to go that route. Are there any entrepreneurs or investors out there who can throw some ideas at me? I'd be afraid to risk everything so I'd like to start small with about $1500 2000 investment. Any and all ideas feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance I have a couple of degrees in Accounting if this helps or not . No pyramid scemes please
